Shape your existence with our Daily Dose of Tough Love.  No sugar coating here.  Nothing but raw, tell-it-like-it-is reflections that will make you rethink how you approach your day.

April 22nd, 2014

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU DID SOMETHING YOU NEVER DID BEFORE?  If you’re struggling to find an answer, consider yourself warned.  Until you make a habit of doing things for the first time, true progress will be stalled.

April 14th, 2014

GIVE UP YOUR NOTIONS ABOUT WHAT SOMETHING “SHOULD” LOOK LIKE.  Be it personal or professional, success or love, stop trying to reach some preconceived standards.  The things worth having most in life will shock and surprise you.  They will look nothing like what you were looking for.

April 3rd, 2014

EXPERIENCE IS OVERRATED.  So stop waiting to “be prepared” to give what you’ve always wanted a whirl.  Lean by doing.  By making mistakes.  Forget the whole concept of I-can’t-because-I’ve-never, and instead allow your fierce determination to be the main prerequisite for making your end goal come true.

April 2nd, 2014

WHAT’S YOUR BRAND?  Be very clear about what you stand for, strive for and represent to others.  Without those parameters defined, you have a slim chance of attracting the people and situations you want.  You must know what you’re selling before expecting anyone to buy in.

April 1st, 2014

DO YOU BELIEVE IN SOMEONE?  Tell them.  And empower them to do what they were put on this planet to do.  Faith is the equivalent of fuel when it comes to staring down obstacles.  So share your confidence and give them a boost.

March 30th, 2014

LEAP BLINDLY.  Without knowing where you’ll land.  Just have faith that you will.  Take chances today.  Always.  And ever.

March 25th, 2014

LIVE YOUR LOVE.  Make your passion the theme for your existence.  Work it, play it and surround yourself with others who share it. Do so and watch your world become complete.

March 19th, 2014

MAKE A PACT WITH YOURSELF.  That you will not give up.  Question your need to do it for anyone or anything else.  Be your own ally.  Your own army.  Your own support.

March 13th, 2014

THERE’S ALWAYS AN ANSWER.  You just have to find it.  If something ails you, irks you or simply does not feel right, get to the source.  When we stop putting bandaids on our wounds the true healing starts.

March 11th, 2014

COMPARE TO NO ONE.  Only yourself.  Because contrasting your body, your performance against that of anyone else is strictly a waste of time.  No two situations or set of circumstances are exactly alike.  Except yours.  Which is why we owe it to ourselves to be better than we were yesterday.  Game ON.

March 3rd, 2014

HAVE YOU DONE ALL YOU COULD? Ask this question of yourself at the close of every day. Then answer. Honestly, with any finger pointing directed only at your own chest. Because it’s within there and only there that the power resides to vow to do more.

February 24th, 2014

EXHALE.  Like right now, at this moment, release your breath.  You likely won’t even realize you’ve been holding it until you do.  Assign a visual reminder for yourself — like a photo on your desk — that prompts you to exhale every time you see it.  Make it a point today not to clench.

February 18th, 2014

WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING YOU EAT (AND DRINK).  Literally every morsel of food you put in your mouth.  Not in a neurotic, obsessive kind of way but as an act of reflection.  Doing so just might prompt you to view what you consume as the nourishment that it actually is.

February 16th, 2014

DON’T HANG IN, BUST THE HELL OUT.  Because you can’t get to the other side without moving through.  Screw the grin-and-bear-it mentality.  Let the fact that it sucks as much as it does fuel you to find a solution.  There is, after all, no anchor keeping you chained to where you are.

February 11th, 2014

LOOKING TO TAKE A REST DAY?  Do it, but make sure it’s placed strategically.  You should always be able to say “I worked out yesterday” on the day you take off.  In other words, rest days should not be consecutive or in a row.

February 10th, 2014

ACTIVITY CREATES ACTIVITY.  So if you want things in life, you must work for them, create them, and cultivate them with every ounce of your being.  Make it a priority to be busy with your goals and you will directly generate their success.  Do something each and every day — make a phone call, send an email, brainstorm, do some research, etc. — that is purposeful and directly related to what you want to achieve.

January 28th, 2014

LIFE IS TOO UNPREDICTABLE TO BE SO CLOSED MINDED.  So keep your options open and always be willing to try new things.  There are an infinite number of combinations that exist that can possibly form your experience.  Don’t count things out and be sure to think twice before deciding to keep things in.

January 27th, 2014

BE INCREDIBLY CLEAR ABOUT WHY YOU DO THINGS.  And then remind yourself of those reasons frequently throughout your day.  Whether you’re trying to lose weight, gain strength or make a major life change you must always keep your motivation for doing so top of mind. Form a succinct sentence about why you want it and then mentally play it on repeat with the volume turned up high.

January 23rd, 2014

YOU ARE YOUR OWN MOST PRECIOUS INVESTMENT.  Every bit of time, money and commitment that you put into yourself yields major returns.  If you want to see progress tomorrow, you must do work today.

January 21st, 2014

IF YOU PUT AN OUNCE OF THE EFFORT YOU PUT INTO WORRYING ABOUT TOMORROW INTO FOCUSING ON TODAY, your accomplishments will multiply instantly.  After all, the only thing you can do to prepare for the future is to make the present count.  So instead of asking “What If?” try exploring “What Now?”  Your only goal should be to make today better than yesterday.

January 20th, 2014

WHEN LIFE SEEMS OVERWHELMING, DIAL IT DOWN AND FOCUS ON THE BASICS.  Pick a maximum of three things to focus on and make them your priorities.  Allow less to be more until you can regain your rhythm.

January 15th, 2014

THE BEAUTY OF OUR LIFE ON THIS PLANET IS THAT EVERYDAY PRESENTS A CLEAN SLATE.  So when you go to bed at night, acknowledge that the day is done and that you have done with it what you could.  Tomorrow, however, holds nothing but promise and potential.  Know that it’s an empty glass just waiting for you to pour it full.

January 14th, 2014

HAS IT EVER DAWNED ON YOU that the tone of your morning sets the rhythm for your entire day?  If you start rushed and hectic you can bet those qualities will accompany you through your waking hours.  So why not give yourself some time to be prepared and presentable?  Even an extra half an hour will help.  Do it and take note of your newfound focus.

January 13th, 2014

MOTTO FOR TODAY:  EARN YOUR SLEEP.  And aim to do so by keeping yourself moving.  By resisting the urge to sit, you will find that the next 12 hours will become surprisingly more productive (not to mention that you’ll be truly exhausted by the time you hit your bed, setting yourself up for an awesome night of snoozing).

January 12th, 2014

THOSE WHO GET AHEAD, PLAN AHEAD.  So give yourself 20 minutes today to make sure you’re prepared for the week.  Map out the Who, What, Where, and When of your workouts, meals and any other obligations for the week.  Don’t leave a single thing to chance.

January 11th, 2014

DON’T JUST REST, REFUEL.  Because sleep is far from the only way to replenish all that you give of yourself throughout the week.  Make it a point to schedule time in your weekend for activities and people that truly nourish you.  Laugh.  Indulge.  Reflect.

January 10th, 2014

FIVE DAYS ON, TWO DAYS OFF IS NOT A STRATEGY.  So stop allowing your weekends to be a complete departure from any health and fitness habits you keep during the week.  When Saturday and Sunday look no different than an ordinary Tuesday, true changes to your physical self will be in your grasp.

January 9th, 2014

EVERY TIME YOU FIND YOURSELF THINKING YOU CAN’T, stop immediately and replace the thought with an affirmative.  By simply reframing the situation by saying “I can” you open the door for progress.  (It only takes one step through that door too.  The other foot just follows.)

January 8th, 2014

HOW MUCH TENSTION DO YOU CARRY WITH YOU?  Pause right now and take stock of your head, neck and shoulders, and see if you’re holding on to anything that can be released.  Continue to take inventory of this throughout the day today.  And every time you do and find yourself clenching, loosen up and breathe deep.

January 7th, 2014

HYDRATE.  OFTEN.  You are, after all, a living, breathing, human being.  Would you expect a plant to thrive if you did not give it water?  You are no different.  Drink up.

January 6th, 2014

EVERY BIG PICTURE GOAL MUST BE BROKEN UP into smaller, more digestible chunks for you to focus on each and every day.  So take a moment now to articulate and define what you want to accomplish in the next 12 hours.  Be specific as you can and write down your thoughts.

December 20th, 2013

PUSH BUT KNOW WHEN TO PULL.  Pull back, that is, in order to let things breathe on their own.  Effort and drive are critical, but ask yourself if they’re attempting to force things to happen that may not naturally occur.

December 16th, 2013

TRAIN FOR LIFE.  Because it’s going to exhaust you, beat you up and leave you feeling sore.  So prepare yourself with the physical to ensure you’re properly conditioned.  It will only leave you better prepared to get back up when you’ve been knocked down — and then send you off with energy to look for more.

December 10th, 2013

MIND LEADS, BODY FOLLOWS.  So stand tall, even if you feel like you’re sinking.  Tell yourself you’ve got this, and do so with a smile on your face.  By convincing those around you, you just might start believing yourself too.

December 5th, 2013

FEELING OUT OF YOUR MIND?  Get in your body.  Movement will bring you both figuratively and literally back to your senses.

December 2nd, 2013

LIFE WILL UNFOLD AS YOU LEAST EXPECT IT.  So don’t bother wasting your time wondering what might be.  The only thing you can do to brace yourself is to remain open to every single possibility and opportunity.  Embrace the fact that try as you might, things will simply not go according to plan.

November 26th, 2013

FIND SUCCESS IN YOUR FAILURES.  They are there to teach you.  They present nothing but opportunities to regroup, redefine and realign your purpose.  Let them guide you back to the drawing board.

November 23rd, 2013

MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS.  If you thrive on keeping the bar high, then you must learn to deal with disappointment.  It’s your choice whether to hold out for situations that fit your criteria or to shape that criteria around what you’ve been given.  Choose wisely.

November 20th, 2013

YOU MUST STEP BACK IN ORDER TO GET PERSPECTIVE.  So don’t hesitate to distance yourself from what consumes you in order to gauge how you truly feel about it.  Just be prepared to accept — and own — what you learn from the process.  If you choose to ignore what is revealed to you, you will fool no one but yourself.

November 13th, 2013

NOTHING IS OUT OF THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY.  Literally.  Seriously.  Nothing.  Live a life of trying, of exploring, of taking risks simply because there’s nothing that says you can’t.  Unless you give something a fair shot, you have no right to count it out.

November 11th, 2013

MOVE THROUGH.  If you’re facing hurdles in your personal life, get moving – literally.  Engaging in physical activity will not only give you the opportunity to assess your thoughts, it will provide you with the strength, endurance and self confidence to act in your best interest with any necessary negotiations.

November 8th, 2013

WHY BOTHER PUTTING STOCK IN OTHER’s OPINIONS?  All they are, after all, is a reflection of that person’s values or beliefs — not yours.

November 4th, 2013

THINK YOU HAVE THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD ON YOUR SHOULDERS?  Then consider yourself blessed.  It means you’ve been given responsibility and commitment and people to care for.  Not to mention the capacity to juggle every one of these aspects.  So reframe how you look at your circumstances.  Instead of what now, try what’s next?

November 2nd, 2013

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH REMINDERS OF WHY YOU CARE.  It’s the only way to maintain focus when life seems to be conspiring against you in an apparent attempt to knock you off your mark.  Find pictures, words, places and people who create that groundswell in you that was once necessary to even start down the path.  Saturate yourself with their messages and remember that you are, you achieve whatever you dare.

October 29th, 2013

CREATE SPACE.  You will not find it, you must make it.  Spreading it around and between the people and issues in your life that are feeling prickly against your skin.  You know you’ve done so successfully when the result is not a protective bubble but a place where there is room for your lungs to expand.

October 27th, 2013

EXCEPT THAT IT WILL GET WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTER.  And don’t fight the process that will inevitably tear you down before allowing you to be built back up.  Allow yourself to sit with every range emotion, realizing that you must be stripped raw to see who you are at your core.  Know too that working through the layers you’ve built up to toughen yourself will take time.

October 24th, 2013

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND ALONE?  When is the last time you visited with you, just sitting with your thoughts minus the noise of family, co-workers or your phone?  Make a point to do it more often.  And if you find yourself avoiding doing so, ask yourself why.  Because alone should ultimately feel like home.

October 23rd, 2013

DRIVE CANNOT BE TAUGHT.  It can, however, be found.  It comes from that thing that sparks a fire in you, that makes your skin tingle like it’s about to burn.  So listen to what speaks to you and allow whatever moves you to do so.  Because without that passion you will only get so far.

October 21st, 2013

WHAT IS YOUR INTENTION FOR TODAY?  In other words, when night falls, what will you be able to say that you accomplished?  Everyday should be fueled by purpose – whether it deals with your personal, professional or spiritual lives.  So articulate your desires and do so with specificity.  It’s the only way to draft a map that will allow you to follow its lead.

October 20th, 2013

HAVE A PLAN AND STICK TO IT.  Do not leave things to chance, because you will need your energy to fight much bigger battles.  Map out your week with the what, why and the when/where, and make a commitment.  Know that you’re the only one responsible for what does or does not get done.

October 18th, 2013

YOU MUST BE ABLE TO TUNE OUT THE NOISE, because people are always going to have something to say.  So ignore not only the criticism but also the compliments. Both have the power to destroy you and will do so if you pay them attention.  Let your internal voice guide your way.

October 15th, 2013

NOURISHMENT COMES FROM NON-FOOD SOURCES.  So feed yourself through plenty of sleep, uncontrollable laughter and soul searching with friends.  Feel full from love and with gratitude, and spend what time you have left deep in meaningful work.  Then sit back and watch your relationship with food take a different shape — guaranteed.

October 14th, 2013

DO NOT ASK FOR HELP IF YOU’RE NOT OPEN TO RECEIVING IT.  Dismissing someone’s guidance before even trying it is foolish and weak.  After all, if you’re in the position to have to ask for help in the first place you’re obviously in need of a different approach.  So be ready to try anything and everything.  It’s the only way to find true change.

October 12th, 2013

WE ARE WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO.   So start paying attention to the actions and behaviors that make daily appearances in your life.  Which are habits?  Which are part of a routine?  Because there is a difference.  The latter will serve you while the former just act as a crutch to serve some unfed inner need.

October 11th, 2013

BE THANKFUL FOR EVERY ACHE AND PAIN.  That’s your body’s way of talking to you, of reminding you that you are, indeed, alive.  It’s proof of being worked, of being productive, of contributing to something larger than yourself.

October 10th, 2013

FEAR CAN BE PARALYZING.  But, if channeled correctly, it can also be energizing.  Instead of letting the “what ifs” clench you in their grip, challenge yourself to be fueled by their fire.  Doing so will ensure you’re ready to properly respond when impact hits.

October 8th, 2013

STEP AWAY FROM THE MIRROR.  Seriously.  We’re all guilty of spending too much time checking ourselves out, zeroing in on our flaws or our features that we love.  Opt instead to see your reflection in others.  Want to feel attractive?  Powerful?  Desirable?  Try looking someone in the eye and see how they respond.

October 6th, 2013

WHEN DOES IT STOP BECOMING WORK?  That’s a question I get regularly from clients who want to know when diet and exercise stop requiring so much effort.  The answer, quite simply, is whenever you stop viewing them that way.  As soon as you accept that they’re a fundamental, beneficial part of your life, you’ll stop perceiving them as such a chore.
